Teaching Assistant training course

This hybrid course is designed to empower Teaching Assistants (TAs) and Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) with the skills and knowledge to make a positive impact in the lives of young learners, ensuring a safe and productive educational environment. It combines face-to-face instruction with flexible online learning. Participants will attend two face-to-face sessions, each lasting 1.5 hours, which will provide opportunities for direct interaction and practical demonstrations. In addition, course learning modules are available through our online learning platform, allowing participants to engage with the content at their own pace and according to their schedules. This blended approach ensures comprehensive training while accommodating the diverse needs of all participants.

This date is the first face-to-face introductory session.

The online modules are:

Introduction to the TA Role in Schools
Overview of the TA’s role in primary and secondary education.
Understanding developmental stages of children and how they influence learning.

Effective Communication with Children
Age-appropriate communication techniques.
Engaging with parents and guardians effectively.

Supporting Teaching and Learning
Child-centred learning methodologies.
Assisting with lesson preparations and material adaptations for diverse learning needs.

Classroom Management
Strategies for managing different classroom settings and behaviours.
Encouraging a positive and inclusive classroom culture.

Assessment and Feedback
Techniques for assessing student progress in an age-appropriate manner.
Providing feedback that motivates and supports further learning.

Safeguarding in the Educational Setting
Recognising signs of abuse and understanding the TA’s role in child protection.
Procedures for reporting and dealing with safeguarding issues.

Professional Conduct and Ethics
Navigating professional relationships and ethical dilemmas in a school setting.
Confidentiality and the protection of student information.

The course will:

  • Provide an opportunity to review performance and expectations
  • Enable the promotion of inclusion and acceptance of all pupils
  • Provide and overview of the school setting and external research
  • Identify and celebrate good practice to support the curriculum
  • Look at planning, questioning and feedback to children and teaching staff
  • Take time to look at what is expected from TAs and others who support or rely on them
  • Facilitate dialogue between colleagues
  • Recognise and value the contribution TAs and LSAs can make to a school
  • Provide a chance for line managers to feed back on performance in a more open forum
  • Provide a platform for schools to identify further training and support needs

The course will also ensure that Teaching Assistants understand the following statutory requirements:

  • Keeping Children Safe in Education
  • Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education
  • Equality Act 2010

Delegates will be provided with logon credentials to the online learning platform during the introductory face-to-face session.

Resource packs will also be provided for all delegates – question packs, workbooks and other useful materials.

A certificate of completion will also be provided upon completion of the course.
