Outstanding reading, Reading deep dives, Developing a reading culture

Would your reading curriculum stand up to a deep dive during an OFSTED inspection?

Now is the time to audit, evaluate and improve the teaching of reading in your school!

The current OFSTED Inspection Framework has a clear focus on reading with a mandatory deep dive into early reading and reading in primary schools. There is an expectation that reading is a high priority for all schools so that all pupils become fluent, confident readers. This course focuses all aspects of the reading curriculum and provides practical guidance and resources.

  • OFSTED Deep Dives – Early reading and whole school priorities
  • Developing an outstanding Reading Culture
  • Choosing the Right Books and promoting a love of Reading
  • Progression of reading skills and behaviours
  • Teaching reading – organisation, decoding and comprehension
  • Reading assessment
  • The importance of understanding Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary to develop comprehension
  • Developing reading across the curriculum
  • Providing support for readers who are falling behind
  • Structuring a reading week
  • Develop a rigorous approach to reading

This course is aimed at:

  • Teachers
  • English leads
  • Senior leaders

This course is for the whole day from 9.30 am until 3.30 pm and there will be activities for delegates to complete.

9.30 am – 3.30 pm

This was a really useful course. It clearly signposted what Ofsted would want to see, gave insight into rationale and theory and provided practical examples and resources to support progress in achieving desired outcomes. I have left with a clear vision about what I need to achieve and how I am going to do it. Thank you.

Claire Sansom The Springfield Centre Deep Dive into reading 26/01/2022

Really clear, methodical coverage of all aspects of reading curriculum developmental stages & ways of over-coming hurdles explored – e.g. plateau at 6-8. Practical application based on research – came away with good ideas what this might look like in practice. Great recommendations, websites, sharing good practice. Thank you!

I attended the course to see how to audit reading in the school and what the expectations are with a Deep Dive inspection. The course showed me what we are doing well; quick fixes that can be dealt with quickly and what to work on in the near future. In other words, it ticked all the boxes!
