Understanding your IDSR – Primary

Course Purpose

This course equips primary school leaders with the knowledge and confidence to interpret the Inspection Data Summary Report (IDSR) accurately. Participants will explore how the latest statistical methods, including revised confidence intervals and multi-year averages, influence how attainment and progress are presented. The course focuses on turning IDSR data into clear lines of enquiry, connecting outcomes to pupil groups such as pupil premium, and presenting trends and sustained impact effectively during inspection.

Course Overview

Primary leaders are expected to interpret the IDSR confidently and explain what the data means for their school. Inspectors no longer focus only on isolated figures but on patterns over time, statistical significance and how leaders respond to emerging trends. This course provides practical strategies for analysing the IDSR, identifying meaningful patterns, linking outcomes to disadvantaged pupils and preparing clear narratives that demonstrate sustained improvement.

Participants will learn how to move from raw numbers to strategic insight, ensuring they can confidently discuss attainment, progress, and group performance during inspection conversations.

  • Purpose of the IDSR and how inspectors use it
  • Key sections within the primary IDSR
  • How national comparisons are presented
  • Understanding shading, flags and significance markers
  • How the IDSR connects to Ofsted’s inspection toolkit

New Confidence Intervals and Statistical Significance

  • Why confidence intervals are used in education data
  • The difference between statistical significance and small variation
  • How the revised intervals affect interpretation of results
  • Understanding when results are genuinely different from national figures
  • Common misunderstandings leaders make when reading confidence intervals

Multi-Year Averages and Data Stability

  • Why multi-year averages are used in school performance data

  • Understanding how pupil premium data is presented in the IDSR
  • Comparing disadvantaged pupils to other pupils in the school
  • Comparing disadvantaged pupils to national disadvantaged outcomes
  • Recognising attainment gaps and trend patterns
  • Explaining the effectiveness of strategies to support disadvantaged pupils

Turning IDSR Data into Lines of Enquiry

  • How inspectors convert IDSR findings into questions
  • Identifying strengths, emerging issues and potential concerns
  • Examples of typical lines of enquiry drawn from primary IDSR data
  • Connecting attainment data with curriculum and teaching evidence

Identifying and Explaining Trends

  • Recognising patterns across subjects and pupil groups
  • Interpreting fluctuations in small cohorts
  • Distinguishing between structural issues and cohort variation
  • Using trend analysis to inform improvement planning

Demonstrating Sustained Impact

  • What inspectors mean by sustained improvement
  • Linking data trends to curriculum changes and leadership decisions
  • Using evidence beyond test results to demonstrate impact
  • Presenting a clear narrative of improvement over time

Preparing for the Inspection Conversation
